Wenda graduated in 1978 from the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, specialising in applied printmaking.

‘It is precisely that balance between commissioned work, in which your creativity is tied to someone else’s message, and the creation of personal work that keeps me in balance.’

Restraint versus unrestraint — an eternal tension, just as in relationships. Inspirations? ‘Warhol, because he casts reality in a different light (and so wrong-foots us), Picasso for his powerful wilfulness, and Malevich for his black square that embraces essence.’ The bridge to her black humour is thus built. Self-mockery as a coping mechanism.

It is precisely that balance between commissioned work, in which your creativity is tied to someone else’s message, and the creation of personal work that keeps me in balance.

All artists are in a never-ending struggle with reality. What you see is perhaps what you get, but certainly not what it is. Veiled in cheerfulness lies that other message, for those who can see.

The NAP object, commissioned by TBS-Soest, is housed at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. My retrospective was held at Bogota in Halfweg in 2020.
