In this first artist collaboration the artists use the darkness of the studio space called ‘Espacio Phi’ in Málaga and invite the visitor on a ‘Journey through the dark’.

The creator of the space is the light artist José Manuel González Martínez, who in this collaboration translates his skills of ‘emotional geometry’ into the gentle composition that this video-wall installation encounters.

The soundtrack of this journey and its temporal dramaturgy is guided by a piece of instrumental music that Wenda Douma applied and contributed to earlier exhibitions in Amsterdam. Sounds of birds and of moving water open the sound journey and transform into a drum-based beat, intensifying the movement of the water and creating a crescendo that then turns into an electric solo guitar.

The harmony follows soft water sounds, the ebb and flow of the tides, up to its high keys. The viewer is invited to let it sink in — the sound leaves enough time to echo and allows you to slow down to the pace of a heartbeat. In a playful allegro the piano opens things up before the closing.

In minimalist detail, Sabine Geierhos’ paintings hang at the corner of the wall and are projected by the light video mapping. Influenced by outdoor painting, they reflect the local changes in Málaga and on the Costa del Sol that she experiences daily. Digital painting and effects of light and water create an abstract, atmospheric yet also figurative animation, which Geierhos created digitally and González then composed into a whole.

The journey refers not only to the daily sunrise and sunset, but to the possibilities of light in combination with water, which has its local references — Douma moved to southern Spain in 2021, Geierhos in 2020, and all three artists live in El Ejido.

The journey can of course be read as an analogy of the artists’ personal lives, and of life in general, as a spiritual journey — with the sea, the sun and the sky, as well as the birds, as constant companions, the bird acting as a particular guide for the viewer.

Darkness as both starting point and end point is constantly present, not only in the studio itself but as an important element in transcending life’s difficulties, and therefore as a creative resource for the artists. With its dark interior, Espacio Phi wants to contribute to the local art scene through its presence and this exhibition, and with the event it hopes not only to offer visitors a sense of identification with this sensual cinematic experience, but also to show its studio space and artwork to the public.

Casa Adnew is not an ordinary gallery, but a living room for creativity and art. My aim is to make art accessible, in the broadest sense of the word. The art is there to borrow, to rent, to buy, or simply to try out. More than 20 established artists from different parts of the world have joined me by now. I am very happy about that.

On Friday 1, Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 April you can get to know my new hotspot for creativity, together with a fine selection of works by the affiliated artists.

Art is deeply personal and close at hand. Art does not belong in a gallery or an exhibition hall, which is why my artworks hang in a living room. My house stands on a crossroads, right in the middle of the lively ‘Victoria’ district. It is always busy, welcoming and full of movement here. Parking spaces take some hunting, so I recommend coming by public transport — or be prepared for a walk. We cannot all fit into my house at once either, which is why the opening is spread over 3 days. Daniël will welcome you at the front door; if it gets (too) crowded for a moment, you can have a drink across the street.

Over the weekend of 1, 2 and 3 April I had the pleasure of meeting a great many new people. A lot of art was rented out or sold, and last week I delivered the first works.

There is a great deal of interest from the local press; you will find a selection of it under the ‘news’ button.

Now let’s Rock&Roll…
because Amsterdam has to open too!

At the end of May I will drive from Málaga to Amsterdam and back again, to deliver art and bring new work home with me. Meeting new artists has become an almost daily occupation. Young artists are given a chance as well. That is another thing that makes Casa Adnew special.

I will be starting a newsletter soon, perhaps later in the form of a magazine. Hanging on to my eyeballs.

Hola, Hello!

It is an honour and a great pleasure to invite you to our first Open Casa event ’OUT OF THE ZOO’, which will take place from 9 to 11 September at Casa Adnew in Málaga!

It was a long-held wish to turn my house into an interesting place buzzing with individuality and creativity. A gallery, but a different one: a place where both makers and lovers of art feel welcome, and where they can meet and inspire one another.

It has worked! Every room now holds beautiful work by 30 artists from all corners of the world, hanging, lying and standing, asking to be seen and discussed. And of course it may come home with you, because all the work we exhibit is available both for sale and for rent. 

Inspiring and being inspired is at the heart of the three days in which we open Casa Adnew Málaga to invited guests, with the artists present. Good food and drink will frame what I am sure will be an interesting event, and one you will not want to miss!

After ‘Out of the Zoo’ in Málaga, Team Casa Adnew returns to the Netherlands at the end of this year to open the doors of ‘Huize Adnew’ Amsterdam. Do not be misled by the title ‘Back to the Zoo’: it refers only to the place on the map where Wenda — and many another artist, adventurer and freedom-seeker — found the inspiration to go her own way. Do keep the end of Friday afternoon, 9 December, free in your diary.

I would like to present to you straight away everything we are going to do in this new year, 2023.

Not only will there be 4 exhibitions in Málaga and Amsterdam, we can also be seen at EMálaga, which we have now joined as well. On the first weekend of June — Friday 2, Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 June — Wenda Douma opens her house Casa Adnew in Amsterdam and presents a new exhibition.

‍

Casa Adnew is presenting four exhibitions this year. They are held alternately in Málaga and Amsterdam under the title M.A.M.A.

‍

These exhibitions follow the rhythm of the four seasons, which shapes the artistic conversation between Málaga and Amsterdam.

After spring was the theme in Málaga, it is summer’s turn in Amsterdam.

On this occasion you can see work by international artists from Spain, the Netherlands, Cuba, Poland, Germany, Iran, Sweden, France, Argentina and Denmark, among others.

The opening will be performed by art director Carlo Wijnands, who works at the Hermitage and De Nieuwe Kerk.

I am curious to hear what you think! This is the second time the doors have opened in Amsterdam; enclosed are photographs from last December, which drew at least 300 visitors.

All we can say is that it is going to be even more exciting.

⭕️PENING CASABERMEJA

We are a few weeks further into the renovation, and it is beginning to become a large Casa space with a heart of its own. A great deal of help from Maria and Juan — it is their building and they are delighted that we are coming.

They have even put their scaffolding at our disposal for the work. And we need it: the enormous height of almost 4 metres asks to be put to good use. Not only in terms of light, but also when installing extremely tall cabinets.

5 September ⭕️PENING

A date has been set for our OPENING: Thursday 5 September. That leaves enough time to build up CASA ADNEW without haste and without stress.

‍

In a word, it is going to be wonderful. Put it in your diary now, book a ticket and reserve a room somewhere near Casabermeja. We are going to make it an opening that everyone will remember.

Over the coming months we will be telling you more about it.

The evening promises lively conversation, a toast (or several) with the best of the Mad Hatter, and creative exchange in abundance. Whether you are a painter, a sculptor, a photographer, or simply someone who believes in ‘six impossible things before breakfast’, we look forward to raising a glass to new beginnings and big dreams.
