I call myself a mixed media artist because I have worked with many different materials and techniques. Lately, however, I work mainly with textile materials. I paint on pre-printed fabrics, using embroidery as I go, and I knit objects. My most recent theme is ‘woman’: I make many portraits of women, not so much to render particular people as realistically as possible, but to give a kind of reflection of ‘woman’. (Perhaps all those portraits together are myself?)
What characterises all the works is that something always seems to stand between the viewer and the person portrayed. There is always a layer in between, so that the subject can never be seen entirely; she does not expose herself completely. But because of that, the viewer can never be fully perceived from the point of view of the sitter either. Mutual secrets, built-in safeties and personal interpretations remain.

Sometimes that intervening layer consists of a painted layer with a pattern from the background that has been painted back over the image in the foreground. Sometimes I embroider over the painting. And in the case of the knitted objects there is often a covered face with no visible features. The women portrayed are always strong characters who often look at you frontally from behind their ‘veil’, but who have thereby taken on a kind of vulnerability as well.
I am Dutch, but for the past four years I have worked from Spain, where I currently live. I exhibit regularly in Spain, the Netherlands and beyond. My work has been shown at the 8th Biennial of Contemporary Textile Art in Madrid, at a fibre art exhibition at the Zhou B Art Center in Chicago, USA, at the SCYTHIA textile biennial in Ukraine and at the URVANITY art fair in Madrid.
